The Baldwin Park Adult and Community Education (BPACE) English as a Second Language program has been honored four times (1997, 1999, 2002 and 2005) as a California Department of Education Program of Excellence. A committed staff and growing student population support our history of excellence.
The BPACE English as a Second Language program offers quality comprehensive English language instruction to adult students via the following programs: ESL, Distance Learning and Community Based English Tutoring (CBET). To meet the diverse needs of our growing community, we offer classes during weekday mornings, afternoons, and evenings as well as Saturday mornings. English Literacy Civics and citizenship are integrated into the program, as well as CBET Competencies (Home Learning Environment, Children’s Health, Safety and Nutrition, School Community, Cultural Issues and Family Literacy and Tutoring Skills), and SCANS competencies (Work Place Skills).
Video/DVD check-out distance learning, computer-assisted ESL and multi-level instruction, and core and supplemental texts aligned to standards. We use the entire community as our classroom by providing field trips, guest speakers and real life learning situations for our students.
Through the CBET program, adult students can access materials and strategies to effectively tutor their children in their home or neighborhood. The ESL program also sponsors cultural, community and educational activities for students and their families.
There are also events designed for students to network with their fellow students in the school environment, such as the Back to School Dance. The ESL program also participates in Open House, Adult Education Week, Career Day and Employer Panel Discussions.
The ESL/CBET and Citizenship Preparation programs utilize the latest technology in delivering the curriculum. We are especially proud of our two computer centers available at each main site. The computer centers consist of 28 student stations with SMART Board instruction, including internet and email access. Students at main sites visit the computer centers on a weekly basis. Classroom computers and interactive instruction are also provided at both main sites.
